Abstract

OBJECTIVE

To analyze the currently available data on the pharmacological and metabolic characteristics of botulinum toxin type A (BTA), to determine the factors affecting these features.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The review is devoted to the key pharmacokinetic characteristics of BTA (distribution, diffusion, migration, metabolic transformations). The factors determining onset and duration of clinical effect and the mechanisms underlying the restoration of neuromuscular transmission after BTA exposure are considered.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION

The pharmacokinetic characteristics of BTA determine treatment tactics and regimen, its safety and efficacy. Therefore, these aspects are of great clinical importance. However, many aspects of pharmacological action of BTA still require further study.
