Surgery is the main option for lower ampullary rectal cancer. Neoadjuvant radiotherapy and extralevator (cylindrical) abdominoperineal excision improve the outcomes but increase the number of complications regarding perineal wound and hernias. There are various methods of perineal wound closure including biomaterials. The authors review biological meshes and results of their implantation.
