Abstract

There is certain terminological confusion in terms of anatomical characterization of fascial tissue not only between anatomists and clinicians, but also between anatomists in different countries. At the same time, fascial tissue is becoming popular as a material for autografts and allografts in reconstruction of various defects. We reviewed articles devoted to anatomical and histological characteristics of fascial tissue and its application in allografts for reconstructive surgery. According to anatomical studies, superficial fascia is thicker on the body and thinner towards extremities. Deep fascia thickens in peripheral direction. Fascial flaps are mainly used in autologous fasciocutaneous flaps. Thanks to dense, smooth and sliding surface, aponeurotic fascia can be also used as allograft in reconstructive neurosurgery, urology, obstetrics and gynecology, general surgery, oculoplastic surgery, maxillofacial surgery, traumatology and orthopedics, etc.
