Abstract

Lipedema is a hereditary progressive disease characterized by abnormal growth of subcutaneous fat. This disease is followed by disproportionate distribution and severe hypertrophy of subcutaneous fat, mainly in the lower extremities. Lipedema was described back in 1940. Nevertheless, there are few data on etiopathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment methods. Lipedema is often misdiagnosed as obesity. Clinical picture of disease is similar to lymphedema or chronic venous insufficiency. In this study, we analyzed the features of pathogenesis, pathophysiology, diagnosis and modern methods of treatment of lipedema.
