Abstract

Objective. To compare the biomechanical properties of epicranial aponeurosis (EA) and fascia lata (FL) as autografts for surgical correction of lower eyelid eversion.

Material and methods. We analyzed morphological, histological, physical and mechanical properties of EA and FL samples. Twenty samples were divided into 2 groups: the first group — FL (n=10), thickness 0.89±0.02 mm, 25×15 mm; the second group — EA (n=10), thickness 0.85±0.01 mm, 25×15 mm.

Results. Morphological parameters of EA are to some extent inferior to those of FL. EA samples are characterized by thinner and shorter bundles of collagen fibers. However, EA is superior to FL regarding physical and mechanical properties. EA is thinner, stronger and less elastic.

Conclusion. Epicranial aponeurosis can be used as new tissue material for surgical treatment of lower eyelid eversion in suspension type surgeries.
